Bisschop was born in Leeuwarden in 1849 as the son of the merchant in hardware Eelco Cuperus Bisschop and Dieuwke Peters. Bishop was trained to become an architect. In addition, he painted from the age of twenty-two and decided to make his profession. His uncle Christoffel Bisschop and aunt Kate Bisschop-Swift were also painters. He was educated at the Rotterdam Academy for Visual Arts. He painted genre and figure representations, portraits and cityscapes. After the death of the painter Johannes Bosboom in 1891, he painted him lying in his chest and made a painting of his studio. He worked successively in Rotterdam, The Hague, Leur and again in The Hague. Bishop was a member of the artist society Pulchri Studio in The Hague.
He married on 30 June 1892 in 's-Hertogenbosch with the art painter Suze Robertson, one of the Amsterdam Joffers. From their marriage a daughter was born, the later painter Sara Bisschop. Their granddaughter Suzanne Eckhart became a sculptor. He died in March 1926 at the age of 76 in Bergen.
Bishop's work can be found in the Van Bilderbeek-Lamaison collection in the Dordrechts Museum, in the Groninger Museum, the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, the Museum of Modern Art in Arnhem and in the collection of the American Art Association in New York.
