Biography:

George-Gillis was born in Utrecht in 1807 as the son and pupil of Casparis Haanen, who also was a painter. He was a member of the’ Academy of Fine Arts’ in Amsterdam in 1835.
 

George-Gillis even worked with J.W.Bilders. They send a painting, called ´Landscape at sunrise´ to an exhibition of Pictura in Groningen.
 

The painter remained several years in Mainz and Frankfurt am Rhein, moved to Antwerp in 1845 and in 1848 to Vienna, from 1854-1860 in Cologne and in 1866 he returned to Rotterdam.

In 1831 he became member of ´Arti Sacrum´ in Rotterdam and in 1835 member of the Royal Academy of Amsterdam.

 

He mostly painted landscapes, church interiors, city scenes , evening twilights and interiors at candle- and lamp light.

 

He also was a draughtsman and engraver and teacher of E.A.Haanen and H.W.van der Kellen.
