De Vries spent a lot of his youth living in Calais but left there in 1918 to attend l’Academie d´Anvers to undertake his formal training as an artist where he was a pupil of Julien Creytens and Isidore Opsomer.
He became friends with Gustave de Smet, Constant Permeke and Albert Servaes and their influence led De Vries very quickly into Expressionism. He particularly admired the way that de Smet and Permeke interpretented Expressionism and also the Symbolism of Jacob Smits.
Like Jacob Smits before him , de Vries applied his paint in thick layers and imbued in them a mystical light. His subject matter was marines, figures, portraits, religious subjects, village kermesses and paintings of clowns.
Works by him are held in the collection of the Royal Family, the State of Belgium and the East Flanders Province.
