Johan Meijer worked and lived in Amsterdam until 1912. In 1925 he moved to Laren and Blaricum where he died in 1970.
He was a student at the ‘Rijksacademy’ of Amsterdam and a private pupil of A.M.Gorter. Meijer helped Gorter for seven years with, for example, cleaning pencils and repairing paintings. After these years he went to Brussels and Paris to study.
He did not only had a teacher, he was a tutor by himself, W.J.Koppius and A.J.Smetz are pupils of him. For several years he was a member of the associations ’Arti et Amicitiae’, ‘St.Lucas’and ‘Laren-Blaricum’as well.
Meijer painted landscapes and animals in a neo-impressionistic way. He had a great love for trees. He was a participant of the exhibition ’Art of the Present’ in the Rijksmuseum of Amsterdam in 1939.
