Jan Hendrik van Grootvelt was born in Varik on the 16th December 1808. He studied at the ’ Royal School of Art ‘ in Den Bosch.
Although he painted in many styles, he is especially famous for his lamplight interiors. Atmospheric scenes, often joyful, about family life or scenes in a café. Detailed reproductions of more than one small happenings in one single room. This made his work unique.
Most of the time the painter tried to draw the attention to one specific scenery and made this to his world of fascination. For this reason he often was called the Breughel of the 19th Century.
More about Grootvelt’s work tells us a lot about what life was like in the early 19th Century. For this reason pictures of many of his paintings were used in books about Dutch history.
Jan Hendrik van Grootvelt died 8 June 1855 in Den Bosch.
