Verboeckhoven was a sculptor, painter of landscapes and animals, lithographer and watercolorist.

He was a pupil of his father, Barthélemy. Before affirming himself as a great painter, he was a skilful sculptor. Studied with A.Voituron at the Academy of Gent, but received also a very traditional education from Ommeganck.

Actually, he gave up classicism in order to make accept by the Academy, so fond of history painting, his preferred theme; landscapes filled with animals. He look up Paul Potter’s tradition without equalling him, but  he surpassed his first teacher Ommeganck. He may be classified among the Romantic classicists.

His success was tremendous in Europe as well as in Great Britain and the United States.

He travelled much to Germany, Italy, Switzerland and France.

He was a member of the Academies of Belgium. Antwerp and Saint –Petersburg.

Debuted at the 1820 Salon of Gent and since exhibited with the same success in Brussels, Paris, London, Saint-Petersburg etc.

Actually Verboeckhoven is saved from stereo typism by the rich detail work with its always very fine  rendering and by his animal-studies. His school created a lot of imitators a.o Louis Robbe, Xavier De Cock, Egmond De Pratere.

His work one can find in Museums in Aachen, Amsterdam, Antwerp, Berlin, Bremen, Brussels, Frankfurt, Liverpool, Nantes, Leipzig, Oslo, Gent, Leuven a.o.
