Very little information is presently available on Aufray, an artist essentially known as a 20th century painter of landscapes and interior scenes.  He was born in Ecouen, a small village a few miles north of Paris, which in the late 1800's, had become somewhat of a mecca for artists who sought truth in nature.  He was a pupil of his father Joseph-Anthanase Aufrey, a gifted genre painter who influenced and nurtured his son's views.

The senior Aufray, perhaps realizing that the site of one's life also brought inspiration for subject matter and meaning, had settled in Ecouen at the finish of his own training in Paris.  Undoubtedly he also sought the influence and success of Pierre-Edouard Frere, a resident artist of Ecouen renowned as a specialist in children and around whom a distinctive colony of genre artists had grown.

The artist exhibited regularly at the yearly Salon of the Society of French Artists between 1927 and 1939, receiving an Honorable Mention in 1931 and a Silver Medal in 1934.
