The painter Gijsbertus Jan Sijthoff was born in Delft.
He was a pupil of the ‘Academy of Fine Arts’ in The Hague. After that period he got lessons from the well known Dutch painter B.J.Blommers who is famous because of his interior paintings and paintings with children.
At that time he lived and worked in The Hague, after a while he moved to Rijswijk, Antwerp and Brugge.
He made paintings, watercolors, drawings and portraits and also paintings of city scenes ,interiors and landscapes.
Sijthoff was a member of ‘St.Lucas’and ‘Pulchri’, the Dutch Art Society and the Union of B.K.’Laren-Blaricum’.
He was the teacher of his wife Johanna Bastiana van Rijswijk, and of A.F.A.M.Hiel and Maria Ch.Sterre de Jong.
He moved to Laren in 1921 to live and work there and also died in Laren in 1949.
He had several exhibitions in Amsterdam, The Hague and Rotterdam.
