Jan Bedijs Tom lived and worked in The Hague. In 1871 he was decorated with the Civil Medal of Amsterdam, a significant decoration for his exceptional skills in painting and realistically reproduction of cattle in their authentic landscape.
The great Andreas Schelfhout himself was very much impressed by the work of J.B. Tom and offered him his lessons. J.B. Tom accepted and experienced it gratefully.
Apart from Schelfhout another true prominent painter of those days, Pieter Gerardus van Os, was his artistic advisor.
His exceptional career ended very sadly; three years before his death his right hand had to be amputated. From that moment of J.B. Tom would not create anymore.
Jan Bedijs Tom was called to be thé animal painter of his time.
