At first Schotel was a captain of the Garde d’honneur (marine), but he painted already in this period.
He became a pupil of A.Meulemans and M.Schoumans. Later on he joinedJohannes Schoenmaker.
In 1837-1838 he travelled trough France and Belgium. At that time he painted sea scapes and river scenes , he also made some lithographs at that period.
He was one of the most important sea painters of that time. A great name in the Dutch art world.
Made about 214 paintings and 275 watercolours.
Was a member of the society ’Pictura’ in Dordrecht.
He was the teacher of F.J van den Blijk, C.L.W. Dreibholtz, P.A.Dijkshoorn, G.W.Opdenhoff, C.P.Schotel and P.J.Schotel.
