Charles Lapostolet is the pupil of Léon Cogniet.

He befriends Eugène Boudin whom he met in Honfleur. Painter of seascapes, his compositions are inspired by those of the Dutch painters of the seventeenth century: a first body of water, a strip of land and the sky, a clear palette, colors of great finesse and a sensitive rendering of the light.

He started at the Paris Salon of 1848 and exhibited there until 1882. He obtained medals in 1870 and 1882.

He exhibited at the Royal Academy in London in 1872.

Charles Lapostolet specializes in port representations. He mainly painted the banks of the Seine between Honfleur, Rouen, Étretat and Dieppe. He also traveled to Venice and Holland.
