The painter was born in Dordrecht. His father was an art dealer.


After his school period, Willem joined his father and studied with other painters from that region.


When he was twenty years old, he went to Paris where he studied three years in painting flowers.


The Grand Duke of Russia ordered him to create wall papers of white Chinese silk for the Pavlovsk Palace in Leningrad.


Despite of the French Revolution he stayed in Paris to live and work.


Later on he returned to Holland and set up in Delftshaven.


Many museums have work of van Leen in their collection.
